🌍Our international network talks about supermarket engagement to sustainability in their country From ditching plastic bags to promoting bulk purchases and adopting eco-friendly practices, the supermarkets are driving a global shift towards a more sustainable future. Woolworths in South Africa eliminated plastic bags, urging customers to bring their own reusable bags. Supermarkets in Brazil introduced paper bags as an eco-friendly alternative. In Spain, Mercadona offered cloth bags for packaging fruits, while Ahorramás used biodegradable bags for fresh produce. Carrefour in France provided kraft and organic cotton bags, and Marqt in the Netherlands encouraged customers to bring their own reusable packaging. Albert Heijn gave shoppers the choice between packaged and unpackaged fruits. Beyond bags and packaging, supermarkets are implementing recycling programs. Woolworths in South Africa recycles batteries, plastic bags, and fabric bags. In Brazil, some stores collect and recycle oil, grease, and other waste. French retailer Biocoop introduced a deposit system for bottle re-use. Organic and vegan products have found their place on the shelves. Supermarkets also embrace bulk purchases to reduce packaging waste. Customers in Spain, France, and other countries can buy products in bulk, supported by brands like Danone and Kellogg’s for example. Supermarket buildings prioritize sustainability, with natural light and water-saving measures like pressure taps and low-energy hand dryers. Supermarkets in Brazil even participate in tree-saving campaigns. These initiatives inspire us to be more conscious consumers and this is only the beginning ! Look at these 5 recent eco-friendly initiatives in France : #International #Strategir

I would like to thank Le Monde newspaper for publishing my latest article on the subject of “regenerative procurement” I share in this article the information about the implementation of the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) on January 1st 2024. The objective is to limit greenwashing practices. However, I regret in this article the slow transformation of value chains towards more virtuous practices, due, according to my analysis, to the difficulty to demonstrate the impact in the income statement. In my article, I promote the adoption of “regenerative procurement “ methods, from the Latin regeneratio, "return to life". It is a "renewal (...) of what was (...) altered", according to the Larousse dictionary. These procurement practices, inspired by regenerative agriculture, involve applying a holistic approach to restoring the business environment. The goal is to create a larger ecosystem that allows for greater collaboration between suppliers and customers. By pooling their resources, companies that develop “regenerative procurement” go beyond sustainable procurement that only seeks to maintain without degrading. I illustrate such practices with the example of Colgate-Palmolive Palmolive which developed a mono-material toothpaste tube by banning aluminium which made this packaging non-recyclable, and which shared this innovation (for free) with its competitors. In the conclusion I regret that only 9% of the total plastic produced (all types) is recycled, 12% is incinerated, the rest is thrown away in the nature. Cards on the table: Single-use paper packaging is not significantly better than single-use plastic packaging. 🚫 ♻️ Each European disposes of approximately 73 kg of paper and cardboard packaging per year. 🗑️ Although paper packaging may seem "sustainable" at first glance, here's the problem: In Europe, the paper and cardboard come from intensively managed monocultures. 🌳 The result is that forest ecosystems are damaged, and the forests can absorb less CO2. It's a lose-lose situation for forests, living beings, and the climate. 🌍🌲😢 "But it can be recycled," some might say. "Well, yes and no!" Even with recycling, there are clear limits: infrastructure, composite materials, and additional manpower need to be invested to process this amount of paper annually. Check out the video below for all the details. ⏯️ The solution is not to replace plastic with paper and cardboard! The priority lies in waste reduction, including the reuse of packaging. And for that, each user must decide for themselves: Choose to reuse! 🌟 #SustainableChoices #ReduceWaste #ChooseToReuse #ClimateAction #EnvironmentalAwareness #Vytal
Disposable paper, single-use plastic: same fight! 🙅 Today, every European throws away about their average weight of 73kg of paper and cardboard packaging every year. Disposable is becoming the norm, and that's a problem: 🌲for the environment: in Europe, paper and cardboard comes mainly from intensively managed forests in monocultures. As a result, forest ecosystems are degraded and forests absorb less CO2. 👥for social justice: to produce paper and cardboard, the EU imports pulp from Latin America and Asia, contributing to deforestation and human rights violations in these regions. ⚖️for the freedom of choice of consumers, who are not offered other options. And recycling has its limits: 🏭 lack of infrastructure, ♻️ composite materials that are difficult or impossible to recycle, ♽ degradation of the material and need to add virgin pulp. Replacing plastic with paper and cardboard is not the solution! The priority is the reduction of waste, through, among other things, the reuse of packaging 📢 Europe 🇪🇺 must take the right decision. Help us spread the word and share the video 👇

This weekend I went to buy fries at our local food outlet in Waalre. It was the first time I went for fries since the Single Use Plastics-legislation came into effect from July1st. My excitement to finally see the SUP-legislation in action, was fast replaced with huge disappointment, as the only thing that changed was a charge of 1 cent on the plastic container! A sign on the counter said that I was not allowed to bring my own due to logistical and hygienic reasons, but there also was no Reusable alternative being offered. After asking about their rationale, they said they are finishing their single-use plastic stock (which I completely understand), to then replace it with Single-Use containers made from sugercane. Meaning the SUP-requirements no longer apply. How does that jive with our collective responsibility and the goal of the SUP-legislation: to reduce the environmental impact of disposable plastics (such as balloons, meals packaging, beverage packaging, straws and cutlery). Yes, it reduces disposable plastics, but increases the use of disposable sugercane based packaging. Thumbs up 😳 @ All involved in the INC3- negotiations for the Global Plastics Treaty, and all MEPs of the European Commission voting on the PPWR: priority should be given to supporting reusable alternatives to single-use plastics rather than substitution with other single-use materials. Check out this great video from Zero Waste France #rEUse #sustainability #environment #circulareconomy #plastics #change #impact #GlobalPlasticsTreaty

Powerful video showcasing the true cost of 'convenience'. Logistically and environmentally speaking, there's nothing convenient about it. As individuals, we need to be in the habit of taking reusable bottles and coffee cups out with us every time. At events, should we now be mandating time in agendas to allow for plated meals, whether that's seated or buffet, no more on the go disposable boxes? As businesses, when will resource-heavy disposables be removed as an option?
